Roy Orbison Festival June 18th 2010

It's just around the corner...what our little town of Wink is famous for. The Roy Orbison Festival music and car show extravaganza. I've heard that there's some new blood on the committee of organizers that are sure to spice things up. I'll go and see if I can round up some information for all you Orbison fans. Until then...mark your calenders for June 18th.

Saying Goodbye To Mona

Wow! This has been an exhausting week both physically and emotionally. Some may remember my posts about Jesse. He's my best friend over here in Wink and the best workout partner I've ever had. Jesse remains a positive figure in my life and has time and time again helped me sort through the jumbled mess that's in my head.

Jesse's sister, Mona, passed away last Thursday from Cancer. Cancer is nothing new for Jesse and his family. He's lost his mother, father, a brother and now two sisters to the terrible disease. Mona's Mass was Monday night and in her honor a bunch of us decided to do the drag in Kermit and Wink as a final tribute. Mona was quite the dragster back in the day so it was only fitting that we take that trip in her honor.

The funeral was held Tuesday. At graveside, as the casket was lowered in the ground, we sent almost 200 hundred balloons skyward to escort Mona's soul to the angels. Mona collected angels and believed that they held special healing and protection.

As I take my final flight, I leave the pain and sadness of this physical world. Where I'm going I shall no longer cry tears of hurt, but only tears of joy...longing once again to be reunited with the ones I left behind. You can't go with me, I must take this trip alone. Don't forget to live...remember I lived once, as well.

Being a NRFU Agent

I completed my week of Census Training and now I am officially a NRFU Agent. I'll see if you can figure out what acronym NRFU is. There were TONS of acronyms in the NRFU training manual. HU, WHEHU, EQ and various other such tid bits of exciting information.

I'd love to be able to tell you that training was extremely fun and riveting, but alas...I can not. Since I had gone through the previous training most of the first couple of days was a recap of stuff I already knew. I really tried not to be a know it all, because I just can not tolerate know it alls. To pacify myself and keep my ADD from kicking in, I texted friends and read a book during the parts I already knew. I didn't think I had bothered anyone, but the next day our CL advised me about excessive texting, she didn't seem to mind the two ladies sitting at the end of my table that talked constantly. In response I limited my texting to breaks and lunch but continued to read my book, which I finished yesterday.

I guess you might be wondering how a teacher managed to take off time during TAKS testing. Normally, I wouldn't have been able to do that, but since the school I am employed by is shutting their doors for good on May 28th, and we haven't had a math teacher for over a month, I didn't think they would mind much. I'll see when I return to work on Monday.

Others have asked what I'll be doing for employment. Well, just yesterday I was informed by the Kermit ISD, a little district about seven miles from my abode, hired me. Yep, the school board met last night and voted to accept my application. Hmmm...that's something the Wink ISD school board could never do. I wonder why?

I was also delighted about the salary. It's good. The drive, a fourteen mile round trip, will be the shortest commute I've had since moving to Texas back in 2001. I've gone from one hundred four to ninety eight to thirty four and now just fourteen miles! I'm so very very excited!

Traveling HWY 18 everyday this week to Census Training had me passing something unusual. It involves wheels, carts, blue containers and a man. I think tomorrow I am gonna stop and take some pictures and figure out what this little man is up to. Should make for an interesting day.

Hope Renewed For Gifts Of Hope...But Not For Steve

I had an amazing weekend full of fun and excitement. Early Saturday morning I baked muffins for a benefit of which the proceeds would be donated to the Hope House in Midland, Texas. The bake sale was part of an all day event taking place in Wink, Texas at the school's fitness center. The event was spectacular and proved to be a huge success!

The KISS party wagon attended providing us with great dance music and the DJ giving updates on the tournament. We had a few young dancers that partook in the day's festive atmosphere. The DJ was also an avid supporter of the benefit and showed this by buying TONS of goodies from the bake sale.

There were nine teams that showed to play in the tournament. Some of our players had to forfeit due to being called out to work, the industry just never takes a break. Jesse, our tourney coordinator also played and has more details to come on just who won and the prizes awarded. I do know that every participant received a very nice T-shirt and gift bag.

On a more somber note, posters in dedication lined the wall of the fitness center reminding all of us that cancer doesn't affect just a few, but that everyone of us is touched by it in some way, either through a friend or relative...or perhaps being a cancer survivor.

Wink is an itty bitty town...maybe only 900 people or so. And yet, these people have the most generous caring giving spirit I've ever had the pleasure to come in contact with. The official count isn't done, but I've been told that the little benefit has raised over $5000 dollars for Hope House. Isn't that amazing?!? Which makes me even sadder when I think about the call I received from Steve Doeung this morning. I'm in a state of melancholy and outrage just thinking about the events that have unfolded...you will be too.

Hope House A Supportive Home For Victims of Cancer

Jesse, my work out buddy and best friend, is a true cancer warrior. Not only did Jesse beat a brain tumor, but he has been vigilant in aiding his sister, Ramona, battle Melanoma. They left for a new cancer study down in San Antonio this morning and they won't be back until Saturday of next week. Luckily for Jesse and Ramona, they have family that will board them for the duration.

Others are not so fortunate and besides having to deal with cancer they come up against room and board expenses that sometimes forces the families to be left behind and unable to be nearby to support their loved one. Imagine if you will having to leave your child in the hospital to endure the pain of chemo therapy and radiation alone, just because you no longer have the funds to stay in a hotel nearby.

That's where places like Hope House have become synonomous with safe havens for families dealing with the treatment of cancer. Ruth Ann Wilkinson set about on a mission to provide hope for cancer patients by establishing a fund.

This fund was meant to create a place where patients and their families could stay and live during their treatment plan/process. Ruth Ann, a cancer patient herself, died in 1996 and never saw her dream become a reality, but those left behind carried on and opened the Hope House on Febrary 16, 2006.

We have our very own Hope House out here in West Texas. You can find the home on 2100 West Tennessee in Midland. This little spring of hope in the hostile environment of cancer needs all of our support to continue to provide lodging and medical expenses for cancer patients and their families. You can always donate on line at: http://www.hopehousetexas.org/.

It is our pleasure to announce that on March 13th a racquetball tournament to benefit Gifts of Hope, Inc. will be held at the Frank R. Barton Physical Fitness Center in Wink, TX. Entry fee for the tournament is $50 per person with registration deadline being March 3rd.

For tournament and registration information please contact: Jesse R. Moya at 432-527-3536 or 432-352-5322. For information regarding Gifts of Hope, Inc. please contact: Mary Collier, Patient Counselor, Hope House 432-687-1949 or 432-335-8275.

All monies paid for registration, concession items and tee shirt sales will be donated to Gifts of Hope, Inc.

Cowboy Tim And The Industry Produced Salt Lakes Of Wink Texas

I grew up in Mississippi along the Gulf of Mexico, I'm a far way from home. I'm used to when crossing a bridge, that that bridge would convey you across some type of water, not dry land, which seems to be the case out here in West Texas. Why would it be that in West Texas, Wink specifically, there would be bridges conveying people across dry dusty desert land?

Here's the answer. Way back when, before there were drilling regulations, the oil and gas industry would just let all that industry produced water flow free instead of putting it into disposal tanks. The water was very salty, referred to as brine. And way back then, people out here referred to the monument draw as the Salt Lakes. They'd even swim in them! Not sure if that was such a good idea.

While I was taking some pictures, Cowboy Tim stopped by to ask what I was up to. I had never met Cowboy Tim before and for some reason he knew exactly what I did for a living. Yep, a teacher...I asked him how he knew of such a thing about somebody he'd never met before and he replied it was because I was nice and what else would a woman do out here in these parts? Isn't Cowboy Tim sweet?

Cowboy Tim invited me to come watch him in action at the Roark Ranch. He's sort of a new fangled cowboy, he doesn't ride a horse when he herds cattle, he rides a four wheeler. Maybe, Cowboy Tim can learn a few things about what women can do out in these here parts. I'm thinking I'm going to take Cowboy Tim up on his offer for a visit real soon. I'm looking for a new job, I'm wondering if Cowboy Tim needs a new ranch hand?

Being De Christmasized

I've spent the afternoon taking down the Christmas tree, putting away holiday decorations and removing all things Christmas like. Being de Christmasized didn't hurt that much and it definitely wasn't at all what I had expected, but it had to be done.

Having lunch with Durango and Annie yesterday after the hike on Tandy Hills gave me good soup ideas. We had lunch at Sweet Tomatoes, a lovely little salad, soup & bread/pizza place. I love soup, and I love salad, but not necessarily in that order. Since I'm on the HCG Diet, I sorta strayed a bit from my narrow list of foods, but not too far from home. Anyway, after having that most pleasurable lunch, I decided that in the woes of undecorating that I'd put a pot of soup on. Mine was caramelized onions, garlic, beef broth, brussels sprouts, broccoli, parsley, sea salt and a bit of lean stew meat. I was thinking of calling it the 3B soup, but I haven't decided yet.

Then there was a rap rap at the door. It was Ms. Jones. Sometimes I help Ms. Jones with her newspaper software, something called Adobe Indesign CS4.
I have some kind of innate ability to intuitively know how software will behave...er wait, that's not me that's this fellow.
I just read very well and am sometimes able to figure things out, after a few hours or days. Well, she was not coming by to solicit my help for the newspaper, but to write a grant for the Rig Theatre.

The Rig Theatre was built in 1925 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. It was a fully functioning movie house way back in the 20s in Wink and now the group that owns the theatre would like to bring it back to life. Ms. Jones had a lot of great ideas for uses...family reunions, summer playhouse, classic film festivals and maybe even special premieres.

I'm in the market for a new job, this has me wondering. Do you think I can get work as a grant writer?

This has been one mighty cold wintry day. Went to bed with it snowing and woke up to it snowing. The temperature rose a bit above freezing, which melted and cleared the roads right nice like allowing me ample time to pick Annie up from school and get over to Kermit to take care of some banking and insurance.

I'm not sure what happened, but my auto insurance company sent me a cancellation notice, stating that I was several months behind on the payments. I know I mailed in the payments, have the bank statements proving two of the checks were cashed, but not applied to my insurance account, the third I suppose is missing. My agent said they were discontinuing business with Kemper and only doing new insurance with Farmers. After about an hour with my agent, we got my insurance woes taken care of.

I texted Annie, who decided to remain at home while I did these errands, to see if she needed anything. She responded that yes, she was hungry. I texted her back inquiring as to what type of food she wanted. She responded, "the kind you eat." What a smarty pants. After I picked her up the type of food that you can eat, I made my way home. Annie was hiding waiting to ambush me with several snowballs. She got my backside all wet.

Not to be outdone, I waited a bit and then went out and made myself a snowball, which I then pelted her with. You can see the cold white powder hiding within her brunette locks. We played this game for quite a while, until our hands were red and very cold.

Early Morning Snowing Shoobie Doobie Wah Wah

This is what I'm talking about! If I'm going to be cold and frigid, I better get some snow to make it worth it! School was delayed until 9AM which found Annie and myself outside romping and playing in the glorious white powder. Annie noticed that the snow is rather dry and thus can't be fashioned into a lively snowman.

We're not expected to warm up until Sunday and as of right now, 8:20AM, there's a slight powder drifting down, down, down. Road conditions are not the best, with some accidents already on the interstate headed West towards El Paso. Schools allow for bad weather days, but I've yet to see one that actually uses the bad weather day. Doesn't make much sense to me, sure seems like a bad weather day to me.

Well, I better make sure I've got wintry supplies. I might also have to make an emergency trip to the Ft Worth area, to assist Mr. Durango in a much needed Intervention of the mysterious drinking and blogging AA.

Annie's Thanksgiving Tree House

About three years ago, the kids and I thought about selling the house and moving back to Colorado. The thought, a gentle shove, had us selling off things, painting, landscaping and fixing up the place right nice like. One of the items that sold rather quickly was a slide/swing set/fort type jungle gym. This back yard delight, purchased in 2002, was a favorite of Justin's and then soon became Annie's favorite place in the backyard as well.

Every summer, it hosted the water balloon fights, water slide, hide and go seek and bubble fairy game. Once that childhood memory was sold, I was absolutely sure that soon the house would follow and then us as well. Well, you know about the best laid plans and all that jazz and it so happens that the "PLAN" never came to fruition.

The next few summers presented a lackluster backyard, missing it's most loved and favorite item. Almost every day during the summer, Annie would comment rather gloomily how she wished she had her swing set with the slide and fort.

Normally, I don't ask for anything for Christmas, but this year I did. I asked my daddy and my ex hubby to build a tree house/fort/play thingy in the back yard for Annie over the Thanksgiving break. It's a difficult situation for a young child, especially a little girl, to only see her daddy four or five times a year, but I'm hoping and believing that the tree house symbolizes everything good for those shared visits.

It's not completed yet, but the foundation is strong. The wood is recycled and old, with knotholes here and there and the smell of pine still lingers within its walls. Each hammered nail broadened the smile on my little girl's face. Everyone needs a hiding place, a place of refuge, somewhere that floods your soul with pleasure. I'm believing that this is her place.

The Shadow, A Ghost OR Just A Chance Shot?

My friend Jesse, whom I've blogged about before has lost a mother, father, brother and now his sister Myrna to cancer. Jesse is a cancer survivor and he is now caring for his sister Ramona who has also been diagnosed with cancer. Myrna's cancer was detected rather late which didn't give her much of a chance to beat it.

Myrna loved all things scary. I think she had like almost every scary movie known to mankind. Halloween was her most favorite holiday and she preferred doing things in the dark. Myrna died October 29th and was buried on October 31st, yep...on Halloween. The ceremony at the church was also delayed due to no electricity, yep...they had the service in the dark!

Then, Halloween night, the family drove around town, paying homage to all the local ghosts, possibly wrapping houses in fond memory of Myrna and creating their own way of saying goodbye. On the way to do some tricking, a cousin snapped her camera at the carport to make sure the flash was working. This is the photo she caught. If you look closely, you can see a black figure, that shaped of a man, leaning over a table.

The Fall Festival A Blast From The Past

I moved to Wink the first time in 1985...kicking and screaming the whole way. I left the beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast and it's miles of beach. Going north from the coast would put you into contact immediately with rolling green hills cascading with clover and Pine trees as far as the eye could see. If you know anything about Wink, well then you'd understand why all the kicking and screaming.

The only saving grace of Wink, was back then they had a really neat Halloween Carnival. Since I'm speaking of the past, I'll use words of the past. When I moved to Wink the second time in 2001, I was dismayed to find out that the Halloween Carnival of the past was only a distant memory of the past. I was truly saddened. I'm not sure if it fell victim to bible belt tightening or just a lack of interest, no one has yet to clarify.

This year came a revival (ha ha) of the Halloween Carnival except renamed the Fall Festival, but it still sported the usual favorites. Haunted house, cake walk, ooey gooey sugary snacks, face painting and all the fun stuff you could do at a small town type Fall Festival. I wonder why we don't bob for apples any longer? Must be because of the fear of Swine flu or something.

There were a couple of new events such as arm wrestling. You paid and could challenge anyone you wanted to a high stakes game of arm wrestling. The winner would receive a really neato prize. Nano Galindo won his match of arm wrestling and was tickled orange with his championship lolly.

Another interesting new time attraction was the dungeon of terror. A person could pay to have another person put in the dungeon for a full five minutes of terror. I thought the warning sign for the dungeon was quite convincing.

Shooting Guineas At Loco Lobo

I spent a relaxing evening at the ranch of two local brothers. The ranch sets outside of Wink and about a mile and a half from the highway. The Wolf brothers call the ranch Loco Lobos, Robbie is the black wolf while Charles is the white wolf. The Wolf brothers normally don't have a woman hanging around, but they made an exception seeing that I was interested in taking a few pictures and possibly lending a hand in the future when it comes to doing a little poop scooping, uh...I mean cow paddy scooping.

The brothers raise cattle, chickens and guinea fowl. I'd never seen guinea fowl up close and I just had to take a picture. They're awfully cute. They run real fast and seem to be a cross between a turkey and chicken, or at least that's what they looked like to me.

Robbie gave me a tour of the ranch on this cute little motorized two seater contraption. I really liked it, he even let me drive a little bit on the way back to pick up some wood for barbecuing later. He showed me where they were going to put a pond and fill it with Koi. There's already a mini sink in that spot, so there wouldn't be much digging needed. I noticed another sink spot, a little bit bigger and suggested that they make another little pond, but that one should be for skinny dipping. I think Robbie took my idea under full consideration.

I enjoyed the ranch immensely and while sitting around the cooker I looked out to the East. I saw the landscape dotted with red lights far off in the distance. Robbie told me those were the wind generators that sit on the caprock between Odessa and No Trees. I couldn't believe it, that's a distance of just over thirty miles. You sure can see forever on a clear day.

Is That Texas Tea?

I know what you're thinking...I gave up coffee and settled for tea instead. Well, if that's what you're thinking, then you're thinking wrong. 'Cause darlin'...that's what just came out of my faucet. I'm guessing that's part of the reason why the water was shut off. The City of Wink was exhausted due to the influx of phone calls coming in stating that the water resembled cloudy tea. I haven't seen any notices not to drink the water. I may be a blonde, but I got enough common sense not to drink that stuff!

Forget about bathing anytime soon, brushing my teeth, washing clothes...I mean, it would be senseless, it'd be like bathing in someone else's bath water...YUCK! What are we going to do?

Oh NO! No Water In Wink!

I only have a few pleasures in life. One of those pleasures is having a good cup of coffee. So, as I was driving home from work, I fantasized about a great cup of coffee. I rushed inside, turned the oven on, put the chicken in for baking, of course after adding a few spices and garlic and onion. Selected the veggies for the evening, straightened up the living room and then proceeded to brew a most righteous cup of java. Turned the faucet on and no water.

I knew I hadn't paid my water bill yet, but I knew I still had until the 10th of November to do it. I was quite confident that my water hadn't been shut off due to nonpayment of invoice. I made the quick phone call to my mommy, she knows everything.

Yep, my suspicions were correct. Our old leaky antiquated pipes have come undone. Seems we've been without water since 9AM and there isn't any chance of having water until sometime on Tuesday. I hope that it's early Tuesday AM so I can at least take a bath before heading off to work and have a cup of coffee! Oh bother.

Final Home Football Game End Of The Pre Game Meal

Since Justin started on Varsity this year, I wanted to commemorate the first year of varsity football in a special way. Every home game, I prepare a pregame meal and send an open invite to all the football players. Our first pregame meal had twelve of the fellas showing up. We've had as many as twenty two and as few as nine, but regardless of how many come, it's always been a lot of fun.

Tonight is not only the last home game of the season, but it's also parents'
night. Parents will be escorted by their football player from the field into the stands. It's a long honored tradition in Wink Football. This evening's game is being played against our biggest rival, Iraan Braves. I happen to work for the Iraan School District. But don't you worry, I know exactly where my loyalties lie...GO WILDCATS!!!

Whisky has been missing now for two weeks. Whisky was our new kitty and while we were away for a few days, Whisky went on his own vacation and hasn't returned. This year's jack'o'laterns are all themed around cats in honor of our missing beloved Whisky. We didn't have him long, but he definitely made a huge impression on this humble family.

Wink's Beautiful Starlets

During the Roy Orbison Festival, Shelby Richardson was crowned Pretty Woman. Durango commented that all Wink Women look alike, well...I'm here to provide some evidence that, that's not the case. Several new Wink beauties were caught on film, strutting the latest designs and hair-dos. Some might even say they look like a gaggle of angels or maybe a flock of seagulls.

The senior football boys dressed in drag to raise awareness and money for children with Down's Syndrome. A ceremonious beauty pageant was attended by all, and although we got plenty of laughs, we were reminded that any effort to aid a cause is worth doing.
